“Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery-the preconditions of all true freedom. Parents should teach their children to subordinate the ‘material and instinctual dimensions to interior and spiritual ones.’ Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children. By knowing how to acknowledge their own failings to their children, parents will be better able to guide and correct them.” (CCC 2223)
Our program looks a little different this year, but our goal is still the same, "to create a program of lifelong faith formation that is centered in and flows out from the Eucharist".
Families with children in Grades 1, and 3-8, will still be registering their children in the program, agreeing that they will be participating in our new format. Parents then will bring their children to Mass each week. The children will submit a Mass Coupon (which can be located in the documents box of this web page). Mass attendance will be tracked and those who are participating will advance to the next grade each year. We will also provide for you parent sessions that will help you with important topics that you should be covering with your children at home, the calendar including topics can be found in the Documents box to the right. We have also provided a parish subscriptions to FORMED.org to help you in teaching your child. The code for the subscription can be found below.
First Reconciliation/First Communion-Those children who were previously registered in Grade 1 that particpated in weekly Mass, will begin preparation for the sacraments in October of each year. They will meet on Sunday monings between 9:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.(the calendar of dates are located to the right in the Documents box. Students preparing to receive the sacraments will also be attending weekly Mass and turning in their coupons.
Confirmation I/II- Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is a two year process. After progressing through our Faith Formation program, a child will enter the Confirmation I program to begin preparation for the sacrament. Classes will start in the early Fall and continue until spring. (the 2016-2017 calendar is located to the right in the Documents box). We follow the practice of a separate Liturgy of the Word for children as suggested in the Directory for Masses with Children. The primary purpose of dismissing children is to provide them with a focused environment where they are more likely to become conscious, active listeners and responders to God’s Word. The intention of Children’s Liturgy of the Word is NOT to baby-sit or provide entertainment for the children. The celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with children is a liturgical experience which opens young people to hear and respond to God’s Word in ways that enable them to be nurtured and challenged by God’s Word.
We invite children ages 4-10 to participate in this Liturgical experience, and we encourage parents and older siblings to become involved as members of our team.
